Thousand Islands Conducts Vehicle Emission Tests on Three Islands

The Thousand Islands Environment Sub-agency conducted vehicle emissions testing on Friday (8/7) on Lancang, Harapan, and Kelapa islands in South and North Thousand Islands Sub-districts.

Thousand Islands Environment Sub-agency Pollution and Environmental Damage Control (PPKL) Section Head Sri Hayyu Alynda Heryati said the activity is part of a routine program to reduce air pollution while ensuring that operational and private vehicles meet exhaust emission standards.

"We conduct these emissions tests to monitor residents' compliance with vehicle maintenance and ensure their vehicles do not contribute to air pollution. We want to ensure air quality in the Thousand Islands remains good," she said on Friday (8/7).

A total of 19 vehicles were tested on Lancang Island, including 17 motorcycles and two motorized carts (germor), Hayyu said. Eleven passed, while eight failed to meet emissions standards.

Meanwhile, 20 vehicles underwent emissions testing on Harapan Island and Kelapa Island. Twelve passed, while eight failed.

"For vehicles that fail the emissions test, we explain the issue to their owners and advise them to have the vehicles serviced or regularly maintained to ensure their exhaust emissions meet the required standards," she said.

According to Hayyu, public awareness of the importance of maintaining air quality continues to grow. This is reflected in the increasing number of residents on inhabited islands switching to more environmentally friendly electric vehicles.

"This activity will continue on other inhabited islands. We hope all stakeholders and residents will continue working together to protect the environment," she added.

Harapan Island Urban Village Secretary Abdul Hafizh welcomed the emissions testing program, saying it is a concrete step toward maintaining air quality across the islands.

"Let's work together to keep the air clean on the islands. Let's make the Thousand Islands a healthy, pollution-free area for future generations," he emphasized.
